“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Colossians 3:23
Unbeknownst to most, a small group of women quietly prepare a gift bag — a delicate tea cup and book mark — to be left waiting for the newest member of our church when she arrives home from her busy day. It reminds her that we are grateful to serve alongside her in the kingdom of God.
A missionary shares her experience in a foreign land with that same small group of women, who are then led to pray for the missionary and her family over the many years they serve abroad.
A single mother and her child recently fled an abusive relationship and find a safe place to stay while they figure out how to start over. That place is supported, in part, by that same small group of women.
Mission-minded women have served First Baptist Griffin and the community whole-heartedly throughout the years. The earliest women’s charitable group recorded at FBC was the Dorcas Ministry, which dates to 1867. The Women’s Missionary Society followed in 1895. Eventually, this group would become what we now call Women on Mission, or WOM. This special group of women welcomes others to our church with kindness and grace. They pray together for missionaries and ministries.
They grow and learn together with each speaker at their monthly meetings, whether the speaker is a church missionary partner or a local organization leader. They serve together by writing cards of encouragement, preparing gifts, discussing local needs, and by completing projects. They give together by financially supporting ministries like Five Loaves & Two Fish Food Pantry, Abundant Life Soup Kitchen, Rahab’s House, Samaritan’s LifeSong, and Fortify, among others. These women embody the values of our church, which we believe reflect the love of God.
But this ministry doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It is made possible by your generosity. Because you give to the regular church budget, resources are available to support these monthly gatherings, provide supplies for projects, and help promote mission awareness.
When asked what WOM means to them, both group leaders, Ruth Alexander and Sandra Long, indicated that it is powerful when a group of women get together for a common purpose to pray and share God’s love to meet needs. They both acknowledged the bond of love that forms between members of the group. They both shared that it is a privilege to be able to be part of and to see God’s love in action in the community, the country, and around the world.
If you would like to participate in WOM, you are invited to their meeting, which takes place the second Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the Hardee Hospitality Room. If you cannot participate during the work day, then please consider coming to the evening meeting on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Cheatham Room.
You can give to our regular budget online at fbcgriffin.org/give. You may also place your gift in the offering plate on Sunday morning, drop it by the church office, or mail it to: FBC Griffin, P.O. Box 908, Griffin, GA 30224.
