FAQ

I am new to your church...tell me about it.

We are so glad you are visiting! We have two Sunday services:

Our traditional service is called Celebration Worship, and it takes place in the Sanctuary at 9:00 a.m.

Our contemporary service is called Connexion Worship, and it takes place in the Family Life Center inside Morgan Hall at 11:15 a.m.

Every so often we do have a “One Church” Worship experience where we combine both services in one location at 11:00 a.m. Watch our website or call the church office if you have questions about these services.

Bible studies (Sunday school) for all ages take place throughout the church campus at 10:15 a.m. Please ask a welcome host about our schedule if you are new. The host is happy to point you to a class that best suits your needs.

Where can I park?

As with many downtown churches, parking is available but not always immediately visible. Consult parking map to find the best place to park based on which area of the church campus you plan to visit.

What should we wear? What do others wear on Sunday mornings?

Good questions. At First Baptist, you will find a variety of dress styles. There are many people who like to dress up and there are many who like to be more casual in their dress. You will see nice suits all the way to jeans. So we would encourage you to dress as you are used to in other churches or what ever makes you comfortable.

Which service should I attend?

We encourage you to visit our traditional and contemporary worship services to find the style and time that best fits your needs.

In the traditional service, you will find that we sing hymns as the organ, piano, and sanctuary choir lead us in worship. The handbell ensemble and instrumental ensemble will also help to lead in worship on occasion.

The same message is preached in both worship services. Communion is held in both worship services on the first Sunday of each month (with only a few exceptions).

In the contemporary service, you will find a vocal team and praise band leading worship that one may be familiar hearing on contemporary Christian radio, but they also blend in the old hymns. A dedicated time for children is held before the message each week, and children have the option to follow the children’s leader to Children’s Worship on the second floor of the Education Building.

What about Sunday School classes?

We offer a wide variety of Sunday School classes.

Children ages birth through kindergarten should be checked in at the Weekday Education entrance on Sunday mornings. Childcare is available for them during both worship services, and Sunday school classes are tailored to their age. Children ages 1st grade through 5th grade meet at 10:15 a.m. on the second floor of the Education Building. The host will help the parent sign in the child for class.

Students in 6th through 12th grades have Sunday school in the Student Center, which is located in the basement.

Adults Sunday school classes meet from 10:15 to 11:00 a.m. across the church. We encourage you to speak to a Welcome Host or a minister when you arrive in order to find the class that best suits your needs.

Is childcare available during worship services?

Yes, childcare is available for infants and children through age 3 during both 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning services.  Our Worship Care provides a nurturing atmosphere for children during worship.

How do I watch a worship service online?
How do I join your church?

First Baptist Church Griffin welcomes everyone to be part of worship, Bible study, Wednesday night activities and any of our weekday activities. If you are curious about our church or about faith in general, we encourage you to visit our Journey in Grace class, which is held once a month in the Heritage Room at 10:15 a.m. with a minister. You will find it a safe place to ask questions and get the answers about our church that you need.

If you want to officially “join” our congregation, we accept members in the following ways:

We accept persons who want to become a believer in Jesus Christ and follow Christ by baptism by immersion. We’ll talk with you about this, make sure you understand its meaning, and then schedule your baptism.

We accept persons who are already part of another Baptist church and want to move their membership to our congregation. You can make this known to the pastor at the end of a worship service or at other times as scheduled. At that time, we’ll then introduce you to the church and then write your former church and tell them you’ve joined our congregation.

We accept persons who have become believers in Christ in another faith tradition, have experienced baptism in that congregation and now want to become a member here. You can make this known to the pastor at the end of worship or at other times as scheduled. We’ll introduce you to the church and then write your former church and let them know you’ve joined our congregation.

What about the Wednesday night schedule?

Wednesday nights at First Baptist are filled with fellowship, music, and Bible Study. A meal is served in Morgan Hall (inside the Family Life Center) at 5:00 p.m. The menu and reservation form can be found on our Wednesday Nights page. At 6:00 p.m., adult small groups focused on topical and Bible studies meet across the church, as does a GriefShare recovery group. Preschool children (through kindergarten) begin their Music and Missions activities at 6:00 p.m. in the Weekday Education building. Children in 1st through 5th grades are invited to join KIDMIN Music and Missions. They begin their time together in the gym at 6:00 p.m. and finish on the second floor of the Education building. The Student Ministry (6th through 12th grades) meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center (Basement) for games, snacks, and worship before their small group studies. Music groups rehearse throughout the evening. If you are interested in participating in the handbell ensemble, the instrumental ensemble, the sanctuary choir, or the praise team, then please reach out to Ellee Hilley and Erin Clarke for more information.

Can I use the gym at the church?

Access to the weight room, aerobics room, or gymnasium outside of a regular church activity may be requested by contacting Leigh Ann Williams in the Church Administrative office during regular business hours (M-F, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00-5:00 p.m.). Please note that access is not guaranteed and will be evaluated based on the schedule of activities at the church, as well as the affiliation of the individual or group requesting access with the church.

Members and regular participants at First Baptist will find the gym available for their use on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays after 6:00 p.m. If you would like to inquire about the schedule for the gym on any other day, please reach out to the church office to ensure that your use would not conflict with anyone who has reserved the space.

Are there exercise groups that meet at the church?
